🏫 I have been contacted by a number of parents in Bassetlaw recently following the decision by the Australian government to ban social media for children under the age of 16. Over the last 18 months, I’ve visited many schools where teachers have told me again and again that social media can harm children’s confidence and make it harder for them to build good social skills.

📵 Because of this, I am minded to support a ban on social media for children under 16. In one of my recent surveys, more than 83% of respondents said they agree.

🗣️ The Government is now asking for your views on new rules that could limit social media for under 16s and you can share your views here: gov.uk/growing-up-online

My daughter had her drink spiked some years ago, when she was a student and woke up in hospital unable to remember how she got there. She was safe from harm and we are all thankful for that.

The fear of spiking is everyone's nightmare and I welcome this police action. My hope is that those arrested, are punished and learn never to do this again.

This is a risk that everyone must watch out for. These guidelines are good to remember and follow:

Watch the Pour: Whenever possible, buy your own drinks and watch the bartender prepare them from start to finish.

The "Thumb Cover" Rule: If you’re holding a bottle, keep your thumb over the opening. For glasses, try to keep your hand over the top or hold it close to your chest.

Never Leave it Unattended: If you have to go to the bathroom or the dance floor, either finish the drink or take it with you. If you can’t do either, discard it. An £8 cocktail isn't worth the risk.

Don't Accept "Surprises": Only accept drinks from people you trust implicitly. If a stranger wants to buy you a drink, go to the bar with them and watch it being poured. We have made two arrests after issuing a CCTV appeal as part of an investigation into a reported spiking.

Inquiries are ongoing into the incident which happened in Retford during the early hours of Sunday 22 February 2026.

As part of their investigative work, our officers issued CCTV images of two men they wanted to trace in connection with the incident.

Two men, aged 24 and 28, were arrested earlier today (Monday 2 March) on suspicion of causing or administering a poison/noxious thing with intent to injure/aggrieve/annoy.

Detective Inspector Jackie Price said: “Spiking is a malicious crime which can have a significant, traumatic impact on victims and their feelings of safety.

“We take reports seriously and continue to work proactively within the night-time economy to safeguard victims from harm.

“I’d like to thank everyone who shared our appeal for information as our inquiries continue into this incident.”
