❤ I was really pleased to visit the Aurora Centre in Worksop on Monday as I joined the teams, local groups, and volunteers who have helped to renovate the Aurora Charity shop.

💛 The Aurora Charity supports patients and their families during some of the hardest moments in their life. It was a pleasure to meet and chat with everyone involved in this renovation.

Today I will be meeting the DWP, North Notts College and Bassetlaw District Council because I am concerned that there are too many young people out of work, whether they are graduates or school leavers who have not found employment. One in nine young people aged between 18-24 living in Bassetlaw fall into this category.

The Welfare State was created to support people in greatest need from free health care to a guaranteed pension, but it must also play a key role in ensuring that those who can work do so.

The Government have announced new interventions targeted at young people aged between 18-24 to encourage businesses to hire and to guarantee a job if they have been unemployed for more than six months.

Work does not just mean money in your pocket, but it expands horizons, builds confidence and opportunities, creates friendship groups and sets people up for life.

I know that if someone has not been in work by the age of 24, the likelihood of a life time on benefits is very high. This is unacceptable and cannot be tolerated.

Below is Secretary of State, Pat McFadden's recent speech on this very important matter.

The Government has committed to the following interventions:

Youth Guarantees: The UK government is introducing a 25-hour/week, six-month paid work placement for 18–21 year olds on Universal Credit for 18 months, aimed at bridging the gap between school and employment.

Targeted Training and Education: Promoting vocational training and apprenticeships, particularly for those with low qualifications, is crucial.

Early Intervention and Support: Identifying young people at risk of becoming NEET (Not in Education, Employment, or Training) early, often before they leave school.

Employer Engagement and Subsidies: Providing incentives to employers for taking on young trainees or employees has proven effective, especially in crucial sectors like construction and technology.

Integrated Support Services: Addressing holistic needs, such as mental health support, emotional resilience, and soft skills training, is increasingly a key component to help young people secure, and maintain, employment.

🏛️Last Friday, I was given a tour of the Priory Gatehouse in Worksop to look at the work that has been carried out by Pinnacle Group and Heritage Lincolnshire, paid for by the Historic England Capital Fund Grant Scheme.

It was great to hear what has been happening from the team on site. Skilled workers and apprentices are fixing the stonework and carefully rebuilding parts of the structure.

I want to pay special thanks to Fran Walker. Her hard work and determination helped to make this project happen.

Once the work is finished, I’m excited to see the building used again as a place where the community can come together.

🎙️ This morning, I spoke on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme about how some people are trying to get around the asylum system.

🚫 We must always protect people who are in real danger because of who they are. But we also need to make sure the system is fair and not used by people who are not telling the truth.
