Do you know a young person who deserves recognition or a thank you for the work they do?An inspiring teenager has described the moment he was recognised with a prestigious police award as he urges more nominations of exceptional young people to follow in his footsteps.

“Winning that award changed me" said R’amarnai Anderson.

“It was really exciting! You don’t realise how many people actually know about you because when I heard that whole room erupt and clap and cheer, I just thought ‘wow’.”

The 18-year-old was awarded Nottinghamshire Police’s Community Hero Award in 2025, which recognises a young person who has demonstrated exceptional commitment to their community.

R’amarnai, who is returning to host the awards evening in 2026, is now encouraging parents, guardians and professionals to nominate, so that others can share in his experience.

He said: “When I won that award it was an amazing feeling, but not only did I win now I’ve been invited back to host it, which is really exciting.

“It’s a proud moment to be there as a nominee, because to be recognised, you’ve got to realise that you made that change, so nominate now!”

After being excluded from mainstream school and attending alternative provision, R’amarnai is now completing a mechanic course at Nottingham College.

“Everyone thinks it’s too late once you go down the wrong path, but it’s never too late, you can stop if you want to, you can change your life around"

Our Nxt Gen Awards are open to anyone aged between nine and 18 who lives or goes to school in Nottinghamshire and have made exceptional contributions to their community.

Two nominees for each category will be invited to the ceremony at Nottinghamshire Police’s multi-million-pound headquarters for an evening of hospitality and entertainment on Friday, 8 May.

Nominations close at 11.45pm on Sunday, 8 February, before a panel of judges shortlists the nominees.

The six public award categories open for nominations are:

Lyrico Steede Award – Awarded to a young person who may have been involved in gangs, knife crime, or other criminality but has made significant progress to turn their life around and inspired others.

Rising Above Adversity Award – Celebrates a young individual who has overcome significant personal or social obstacles and become a beacon of hope for others.

Youth Impact Award – For a young person who demonstrates honesty, fairness, and strong moral principles, and who has made an impact on people’s lives.

Youth Creative Excellence Award – For young talents who have contributed to the arts and cultural enrichment of their community through singing, dancing, acting, or anything creative.

Leadership Award – Recognises young people who lead projects, show initiative, and encourage others to do their best, whilst showing reliability.

Inspiring Young Minds Award – Recognises acts of courage, whether standing up for what’s right, helping others in danger, or facing personal challenges.

Yesterday I visited Panattoni Park Central A1[M] 🧱

This site is a huge opportunity for Bassetlaw. not just because of its size, but because of what it could mean for local people⭐️

While the site is currently vacant, it has the potential to bring all sorts of jobs for local people across Bassetlaw. These could include warehouse roles, office-based jobs, engineering, and management🧑‍💼

This morning I held a coffee morning in Misterton, and it was great to see so many of you there.

Thank you to everyone who came along to chat and share what matters to you. I’ll be visiting all areas across Bassetlaw so everyone has the chance to come to a coffee event.

Last Sunday, I was on BBC Politics East Midlands speaking up for Bassetlaw.

I challenged the Reform-led Nottinghamshire County Council over false claims about council tax rises that were pushed out in Bassetlaw before the election.

The truth is this Government has given Nottinghamshire County Council a 30% funding increase, that’s £234 million.

People in Bassetlaw deserve to see this money making a real difference, like fixing potholes and improving local services
