Earlier this year, the Government announced changes to when some prisoners will be released because our prisons are dangerously overcrowded. We need to be honest about how we got to this point. The blatant truth is that the government inherited prisons operating at close to 99 per cent capacity, with only 500 prison places added […]
This month I hosted my annual Bassetlaw Summer School, bringing together 40 secondary school students from Bassetlaw to offer life-changing opportunities, lift aspirations and explore future career opportunities. One of my priorities as our Member of Parliament is to raise the aspirations of our young people. Students in Bassetlaw have just as much talent as […]
For too long, places like Bassetlaw have been held back because too much power sits too far away. Decisions about local transport, skills, housing, high streets, jobs and public services are still too often made in London by those who do not understand our area. That has not worked. I feel and understand the frustration […]
Everyone knows the NHS needs change. People are waiting too long for appointments. Too many patients feel they are passed from pillar to post. The system often feels too big, too slow and too far away from the people it is meant to serve. I am sitting on the Bill Committee for the new Health […]
Keir Starmer has resigned as Prime Minister. Keir led Labour to a historic general election victory following 14 years in opposition, when we had lost credibility following Corbyn, antisemitism and mismanaging Labourโs response to the Brexit Referendum. He deserves our respect for his commitment to service, putting our country before self and ensuring that we […]
I welcome the news that social media is to be banned for under-16s. Over the last few months, I have been asking for your views on this. I want to thank all those who have contacted me to share their thoughts. I began my consultation with an open mind and ran a public survey asking […]

Sport brings people together, inspires the next generation and creates opportunities for our communities. We saw this in 2012 when London hosted the Olympic Games, leaving a lasting boost for the economy and inspiring more people to get involved in sport.
๐๏ธ The new Sporting Events Bill will help the UK attract and host more major sporting events. It will also give sports fans better protection and make it easier to get fair access to tickets.
โฝ With Euro 2028 on the horizon, these changes will help show the world that the UK is ready to host major events and give more people the chance to enjoy them.
๐ It's great to see sports organisations backing the Bill and recognising how it can help bring even more world-class sporting events to the UK.

๐จRural Crime Action Team๐จ
When I recently met with local farmers at an NFU meeting, they told me about the problems rural crime is causing across Bassetlaw. This includes fly-tipping, fuel theft and illegal bikes, all of which can cause real problems for farmers and rural communities.
Thatโs why I welcome the news that Nottinghamshire Police is providing extra funding for a new Rural Crime Action Team, along with new vehicles and the tools and technology officers need to tackle these crimes.
Our farmers and rural communities deserve to feel safe and protected. This extra support is an important step towards tackling rural crime and helping protect the people who work and live in our countryside.

๐ชช You have told me you want a firm but fair migration system. Fair to those arriving here legally who contribute, work hard and play by the rules, but also fair to the British people. This means not putting additional pressure on our NHS or welfare system.
๐ You have told me you want proper control of our borders and a reduction in numbers. Net migration under the previous government was out of control. Net migration is down 82% from its peak and small boats arrivals are down 43% this year.
๐ You have told me you want a migration system that only allows those who contribute, pay taxes and obey the law to earn the right to live here and have access to our NHS and welfare system.
These changes mean that:
โ
Everyone who settles in our country must have a clean criminal record, speak English well, and have no debt to the taxpayer.
โ
10 years will become the standard route to settle in the UK. Those who come here must contribute by working and paying taxes before they can make the UK their permanent home.
โ
Higher earners and public service workers like doctors, nurses and teachers will qualify for settlement after five years, and the highest earners will be able to qualify after three years.
โ
Eligible care workers who came here before May 2025 and met their visa conditions can remain on a five-year route to settle in the UK. This is a fair deal for care workers, and a fair deal for British citizens who rely on those working our care homes.
โ
Those who came to the UK by small boat will face a 30-year penalty to settlement. Genuine refugees who come here legally will face a shorter wait to settle.
