This week, I was able to bring the important issue of breast cancer screening to the national stage. On Monday, I held an adjournment debate in Parliament on my local campaign to encourage more women in Bassetlaw to attend their breast screening appointments. The proportion of eligible women attending for a mammogram in Bassetlaw has […]

After a good kicking at elections, the usual and heavily anticipated response from the ruling party is that we are listening. But this isn’t going to wash. Labour needs a reset. Sir Keir Starmer has shown strong leadership internationally and he needs to start showing the same leadership in our own country and stop the […]

The first duty of any government is to keep the country safe. This week’s announcement that the government will boost defence spending to 2.5% of national income, the biggest boost since the Cold War, is a giant leap forward in the effort to safeguard our security in an increasingly dangerous and unpredictable world. Putin’s illegal […]

Here in Bassetlaw, most people work hard all their lives, pay their dues and want to live comfortably. What unites many in anger is the known benefit fraudster, who lives down the street. With billions of public money lost last year, it is time at long last for real action against the fraudsters. Those who […]

The Government has today announced a £410 million investment to develop cutting-edge fusion energy, which promises to be a safe, low carbon and sustainable part of the world’s energy supply with potential to help sustain net zero in the future. The prototype fusion energy plant is set at the site of a former coal power […]

The previous Bassetlaw Member of Parliament for Bassetlaw, John Mann alongside Sarah Champion, were the two MPs who stepped up and gave evidence to the Professor Jay Inquiry. They spoke up for their constituents and I am duty bound to continue to be the voice of victims and survivors in Bassetlaw. Unlike the vast majority […]

🎆 Fireworks play an important part in celebrations, with millions of people enjoying them every year. But many people who contact me are also concerned about the noise, safety risks, and the distress they can cause to people and animals.

The Government has already taken steps to promote the safe and responsible use of fireworks. However, many people have told me that these measures do not go far enough.

I've heard from pet owners, veterans, emergency service workers and others about their concerns around firework use, and these experiences all help to shape the next steps.

The Government is now asking for your views on possible changes to fireworks laws, with the aim of reducing problems like excessive noise and anti-social behaviour whilst still allowing fireworks to be enjoyed at important celebrations.

Across Bassetlaw, we know that good jobs change lives, and every young person deserves the opportunity to build a successful future.

That's why I welcome the Government's plans to change the way public contracts are awarded. Companies bidding for major government contracts will now be expected to demonstrate how they'll create local jobs, offer training and work experience, and help tackle skills shortages.

With too many young people not in education, employment or training, every pound of taxpayer cash should help to create opportunities in every region - not to just deliver on a contract.

By backing businesses that invest in local people, we can strengthen our economy, support the next generation into good jobs and ensure growth is felt in every part of our community.
